Cardinals predictions: Will the Niners end the losing streak? The San Francisco 49ers are officially playing out the string after being eliminated from playoff contention following their. Pro Football Network: Cardinals 28, 49ers 24. Jarrett Bailey writes: 'The 49ers’ roller-coaster season.

The San Francisco 49ers are officially playing out the string after being eliminated from playoff contention following their Week 15 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The Niners will play the penultimate game of their 2020 regular season against the Arizona Cardinals.

Nick Mullens suffered an elbow injury against the Cowboys, meaning C.J. Beathard will start at quarterback for the first time since 2018. The 2017 third-round pick is 1-9 in his last 10 starts and will have the recently-signed Josh Rosen backing him up.

Tight end George Kittle is expected to return to the lineup, which will give a big boost to the struggling Niners’ offense.

Arizona holds the final playoff spot in the NFC and controls its destiny going into the last two weeks. The Cardinals have won back-to-back contests to improve to 8-6 and hold a one-game lead over the Chicago Bears.

San Francisco lost its season-opener against Arizona, dropping a 24-20 decision. With everything that has gone on in 2020 for the 49ers, the defeat feels like it happened years ago.

Here are the predictions for Week 16 from Niners Nation contributors:

49ers vs raiders predictions

Kyle Posey: For the first time all season, it feels like I have no idea what to expect. George Kittle is going to play, but nobody knows how much and how effective Kittle would be. San Francisco has lost six of their last seven games by just over 11 points per game. Nick Mullens is out, and C.J. Beathard is in. Beathard said he’s going to play loose and rip it. That could be very good or very bad for a Niners offense that hasn’t found their stride all season thanks to injuries.

Turnovers have plagued a 49ers offense that has outgained the Saints, Rams, Cowboys, and Washington’s football team by a combined 1,428 yards to 1,029. Yes, some of those yards have come by way of garbage time, but the 49ers haven’t struggled to move the ball. They’ve struggled to hold onto the ball.

While the Cardinals have won two in a row, they did so against an Eagles secondary full of backups and a Giants team that didn’t have a fully healthy Daniel Jones. Something feels off when you watch Arizona. They don’t feel like a playoff team. I can’t pick the 49ers to win because there is still a backup quarterback, and with injuries, it’ll make the margin for error thin as always, but this will be a one-possession game.

Kyle’s prediction: 24-20, Cardinals

Rob Guerrera: The 49ers couldn’t beat the Cardinals when almost everyone was healthy, so why in the world would they be able to beat them now with half the roster injured and CJ Beathard at quarterback? I hope to have a guy under center that can actually throw will at least allow Kyle Shanahan to dial up some deep passes, but I am not expecting much of a fight from the 49ers. 2020 has taken its toll on them, and I think this one gets out of hand early. The only real victory would be George Kittle avoiding injury in a game he should never have been playing.

Rob’s prediction: ARI wins, 31-14

Jas Kang: I was surprised to see the betting line open up with the Cardinals being just two-point favorites. The 49ers are 1-6 over their last seven and miss a ton of guys going into their final two games of this awful 2020 season. It should indicate how terrible this season has been that I am legitimately looking forward to seeing Beathard play quarterback. Seeing Mullens falter week-after-week became tiresome, so at least we get something fresh this week along with the return of Kittle. Arizona quarterback Kyler Murray has bounced back the last couple of weeks and has gotten All-Pro receiver DeAndre Hopkins going once again. I think this game will be tight until the Cardinals pull-away in the third quarter.

Jas’ prediction: AZ wins, 27-17

John Breech writes: 'The Raiders swept this series last season while going 2-0 ATS in those two games. One other thing to like about the Raiders is that they're 5-1 ATS in their past six road games (4-2 straight up). As for the Chargers, betting on them in a home game is almost always a risk. Since the start of the 2018 season, the Chargers are just 5-13-1 ATS at home (7-11 straight up). One thing to like about the Chargers though is that they're 5-2 ATS on the season, which is tied for the third-best mark in the NFL.'

Ryan Gosling writes: 'The Las Vegas Raiders head into this game at 3-3 on the season. Their defense is struggling, allowing 32.8 points per game and a 99.7 quarterback rating. That is terrible news considering they will be facing off against arguably the NFL’s hottest quarterback this week. Justin Herbert has thrown 14 touchdowns and just three interceptions in his five starts so far. Some of the throws he is making should even impress the aforementioned Patrick Mahomes. His team has coughed up three 16 point leads already this season, so this Week 9 NFL pick is not made with a significant amount of certainty, but I do believe Herbert gets the win here.'

Vinnie Iyer writes: 'The Raiders love being a grinding team under Jon Gruden. They don't care about style points, just about scoring enough points. This matchup screams for them to keep Josh Jacobs rolling on the ground and deploy Darren Waller often to exploit the Chargers' biggest coverage weakness. That's good news to put Derek Carr in business and in position to outduel Justin Herbert.'

Vincent Frank writes: 'Raiders head coach Jon Gruden was not a happy camper when it comes to his team’s performance on defense heading into Week 8. At 3-3 on the season, Las Vegas was yielding an absurd 32.8 points per game. It was also allowing a 99.7 quarterback rating and has recorded all of seven sacks in six games (miss Khalil Mack some?). That changed in windy conditions during a 16-6 win over the Browns in Cleveland last week. Now at 4-3, these Raiders are thinking playoffs. As for the Chargers, Justin Herbert continues to play out of his mind. He’s accounted for 17 touchdowns and just five interceptions in six starts. Unfortunately, that six-game span has included just one win. Los Angeles has a way with losing close games. Expect that to be the case in Week 9, potentially leading to Anthony Lynn’s ousting as head coach.'

Gil Alcaraz IV writes: 'Ugh. I keep rooting for the Los Angeles Chargers to get their act together, and they keep letting me down. I love their young quarterback, their defense is solid and they’ve got plenty of playmakers to help put points on the board. Yet the losses keep coming. Then again, it’s classic Chargers. For years now, they’ve had a knack for blowing games in big ways. Whether it’s coming back from down big just to fall flat in the final minutes or suffering a second-half collapse like they did in Week 8, Los Angeles just can’t seem to get out of their own way. That likely won’t change against the Las Vegas Raiders. The Raiders, coming off a solid win against the Browns, have had their ups and downs this season. For the most part, though, they’ve got the makings of a playoff team. Derek Carr is having an exceptional year, the defense is much improved from a season ago, and things are finally starting to click with Jon Gruden and his grand plan. Las Vegas needs to keep winning if they hope to keep up in the hunt for an AFC Wild Card spot. Defeating the Chargers will be a good start, especially since they have a tendency to choke against quality (or really, any) competition. Score another W for the Raiders in Week 9.'

Oliver Hodginkson writes: 'The fierce AFC West rivalry returns. After winning the last two matchups between the bitter rivals, the Las Vegas Raiders hold a 65-54-2 advantage over the Los Angeles Chargers. Can they add to that advantage in the first game of the late afternoon Week 9 slate? After beating the Cleveland Browns, and the Chargers collapse to the Denver Broncos, the Raiders have emerged as the closest contender to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West. However, their pass defense will face a stern test against the Justin Herbert led Chargers offense. The Chargers defense allowed 6.8 yards per carry against the Broncos, and if Josh Jacobs gets that level of production early on, then the Raiders will ride him all night long.'

The Chargers are fun with Justin Herbert tearing it up, but this is still the Chargers. They can find a way to lose any game. I get it. The Raiders’ advanced stats aren’t all that pretty and the defense is not good. But I believe in the Raiders.'
