Parasite Oscar Betting Odds

Sports Betting Dime has 'Once Upon A Time.In Hollywood' coming in at +125 odds. Tarantino has never won a Best Picture Oscar. '1917' and 'Parasite' are also notable contenders.

The 2020 Academy Awards were a shocking affair, full of betting upsets, and the 2021 edition could follow suit. Here at USAOnlineSportsbooks are here to break down entertainment betting odds and more generally explain what the Academy Awards are. We’ll detail why people bet on the Academy Awards as well as touch on a few of the best practices for doing so.

Many 2021 academy awards gambling guides will focus on the individual odds, which we will touch on. First things first, we are going to start with breaking down what the Academy Awards are, for those of you that are unaware, then we will discuss how to best bet on them. Finally, we will touch on what the betting odds were for some of the major categories like Best Actor, and then what actually happened at the Oscars. As a little bonus, we will also go over some of the fun prop bets on the Academy Awards that are available at online sportsbooks.

What Are The Academy Awards?

  • Oscars predictions: 2020 Oscar picks and odds for Academy Awards betting. Commercial Content. Best Picture odds: 1917-125: Parasite +150: Once Upon A Time In Hollywood +1000.
  • The 2021 Oscars is set to take place on April 25, 2021 as some sportsbooks are beginning to release early odds. In 2020, only Indiana and New Jersey allowed legal betting on the Academy Awards although there is hope more states legalize the market. 888sport, a legal US operator in the United States, also has betting shops set up overseas and they’re one of the first to open their numbers.

The Academy Awards are more commonly known as the Oscars, and they are the premier event in entertainment awards shows. Oscars are legacy-defining awards to get and are treated with the highest level of prestige and sophistication in Hollywood. The Academy Awards are presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the members of which include some of the most decorated and impressive filmmakers of our era. The Oscars are the oldest televised worldwide entertainment awards show. The awards were first presented in 1929, and over 3000 of them have been given out to date. It was broadcast via radio beginning in 1930, and over television beginning in 1953.

Betting Legally On The 93rd Academy Awards

So, one problem with the implementation of the legalization of state-sanctioned sports betting is that it is specifically focused on sports betting, and has restrictions on what other events you can bet on. Basically, your local state-sanctioned sportsbook is a sportsbook, and nothing else. No entertainment betting, sometimes even no betting on local college basketball.

The good news is that online sportsbooks, being subject not to the whims of the United States government but instead to their respective local jurisdictions, have far fewer restrictions on what you can place bets on. This means that the likely best place for placing bets on the 2021 Academy Awards is going to be at an online sportsbook, or perhaps several if you see value in shopping lines for this event.

2020 Academy Awards Betting Odds And Results

Best Picture

There was, famously, an upset at the Oscars this year, as Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite took home the coveted Best Picture award, beating out heavy favorite 1917, and making the sportsbooks a ton of money. A foreign film had never won the best picture before, and Parasite broke that streak, being entirely filmed in Korea, and only accessible to English speaking audiences via subtitles.

Best Picture

  • 1917 -275
  • Parasite +300
  • Once Upon a Time in Hollywood +650
  • Joker +1400
  • Jojo Rabbit +5000
  • The Irishman +5000
  • Marriage Story +8000
  • Little Women +10000
  • Ford v Ferrari +12500

Best Actor

This category was locked up by Joaquin Phoenix’s performance in Joker, where he plays the eponymous Joker, in a supervillain film that touches on the lack of support for the mentally ill and the ways in which people are radicalized. Phoenix was a colossal favorite entering the night and won in an extremely unsurprising manner. The most surprising thing about Phoenix’s win was his speech, which touched on animal and environmental justice.

Best Actor

  • Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) -2500
  • Adam Driver (Marriage Story) +700
  • Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) +2200
  • Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory) +2500
  • Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes) +2500

Best Actress

Speaking of colossal favorites, Renee Zellweger’s portrayal of Judy Garland in Judy was a similarly prohibitive favorite in the Best Actress category. Just like Phoenix’s Joker in the previous category, this performance winning was no surprise.

Best Actress

  • Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story) +750
  • Cynthia Erivo (Harriet) +900
  • Saorise Ronan (Little Women) +2800
  • Renee Zellweger (Judy) -2000
  • Charlize Theron (Bombshell) +3300

Best Director

Bong Joon Ho again upset Sam Mendes, as he won Best Director with the second shortest odds, at +450, upsetting Mendes’ -900 favorite status. This was a fairly significant upset, but not the most significant one that Parasite or Bong Joon Ho was responsible for on the night.

Best Director

  • Bong Joon Ho (Parasite) +450
  • Sam Mendes (1917) -900
  • Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) +1000
  • Martin Scorsese (The Irishman) +3300
  • Todd Phillips (Joker) +5000

Best Supporting Actor

There were no surprises in the Best Supporting Actor category, as Brad Pitt’s performance in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” took the top spot, and was one of the most prohibitive pre-show favorites. Pitt’s -2500 odds made betting on this category look widely unappealing, and the fact that he won justified that perspective.

Best Supporting Actor

  • Joe Pesci (The Irishman) +800
  • Al Pacino (The Irishman) +1800
  • Tom Hanks (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood) +2000
  • Brad Pitt (Once Upon A Time In Hollywood) -2500
  • Anthony Hopkins (The Two Popes) +3300

Best Supporting Actress

Finally, we have the Best Supporting Actress category, where Laura Dern’s performance in Marriage Story was an enormous favorite at -2200 odds. The next closest performance in this category was Margot Robbie’s turn in Bombshell, and everything else is firmly in dark horse to longshot territory. Of course, Laura Dern won, cementing this as a night of heavy favorites, with the exception, of course, being Bong Joon Ho and Parasite.

Best Supporting Actress

  • Margot Robbie (Bombshell) +800
  • Florence Pugh (Little Women) +1400
  • Scarlett Johansson (Jojo Rabbit) +2000
  • Laura Dern (Marriage Story) -2200
  • Kathy Bates (Richard Jewell) +3300

Oscars odds are very telling, as the movements do not happen for every award. As you can see above, a lot of nominations have the same odds now in the week leading up to the Oscars as they did when odds opened. When the odds do change, they can be drastic.

Best Picture

Parasite Oscar Betting Odds

The odds movement for “Best Picture” has been most drastic, with the ever-so-popular 1917 rising to a -278 favorite, up from -167. Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit declined to +10000, essentially out of the running. Given how much 1917 jumped, the other “candidates” in Parasite and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood dropped from +275 to +350 (Parasite) and +450 to +550 (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood). It will be interesting to see how these odds move during Oscars week.

Best Actor

This was all but a lock when odds were released as Joaquin Phoenix opened as a massive -2500 favorite on DraftKings Sportsbook. Now, he is all the more favored at -3335. Adam Driver is “second” but is a 10:1 longshot. This is Phoenix’s award to lose. He was excellent in “Joker”, and has revitalized his career with a terrific performance and likely an Oscar.

Best Actress

Parasite

While not as much of a favorite as Phoenix, Renee Zellweger’s opening odds were -2000 to win Best Actress, and she has seen that grow all the way to -2500. Second is Scarlett Johansson at +1000, but again this award is all but settled in terms of odds. If Zellweger holds on, this is a great addition to her Golden Globe for Best Actress in Motion Picture award.

Best Director

When odds were released, this was going to be a very close race. Sam Mendes came in at -230 as the clear favorite, but Bong Joon Ho wasn’t far behind at +200. Now, Mendes is a clear favorite at -670 indicating that the Best Director for the 2020 Oscars will indeed go to Mendes, in what is expected to be one of many awards for the “1917” cast and crew.

Best Supporting Actor

When did you ever think you would see this list as a “supporting actor” Oscar odds list at the same time? With a star-studded group from Pitt to Pesci to Pacino to Hanks, and even Anthony Hopkins as the longshot, this was expected to be a bit closer when you look at the names on the ballot. The odds have not changed, and Brad Pitt is expected to receive the Oscar, following his similar awards at other shows. Pitt could clean up in 2020.

Best Supporting Actress

Even with an insane list of names from Margot Robbie to Scarlett Johansson, Laura Dern’s odds have not wavered as she still remains the overwhelming favorite for best supporting actress at -2500. Dern’s role in “Marriage Story” has earned her the top spot in terms of being the favorite to win this Oscar.
